Career Mode: The New Features

I have a confession to make… Remember when we went to Guildford for the first time? And we brought all that lovely FIFA 12 gameplay information back? Well some of you may remember us mentioning that Day 1 of the Guildford play test in May was very heavily embargo’d and there was a very good reason for that because… Six weeks ago… We were playing Career Mode!!

You have no idea how hard its been to keep that a secret  but thankfully the lid on Career Mode has now been lifted. Which means we can give you a run down of the new features which grace FIFA 12′s Career Mode. We won’t be posting any opinion/impressions yet because we’re playing a newer build of Career Mode today and want to take that in before nailing our colours to the mast.

Career Mode: The New Features

Visuals: Visually things are pretty similar but the whole front end has been nicely polished. The calendar for advancing matches now embeds in the main screen allowing you to track news and events while the game progresses. You can also halt the advancement at any time if you want to stop and read an article or deal with a transfer deal. There are new colour coded calendar items for league, cup, friendly and European matches too.

Scouting: Yes, scouting is finally back in Career Mode but only for  youth players players. You can hire up to three scouts and send them to different regions around for a duration of your choice. The scouts themselves vary in quality with the best scouts demanding the most cash. To get accurate data on the quality of the youth prospects in a region you may need to scout multiple times, however if you wait too long a rival club could step in and sign the player you’re after.

Youth Academy: And once you’ve scouted your young prospects and decided to sign them they get added to your Youth Academy. From here you can track their development and when the time is right either move the players in to your first team squad or realise you made a terrible mistake and send them packing.

Player Stories: Throughout the season players will now approach the manager voicing their concerns or happiness at certain decisions. The topics range from injury worries, lack of game time, unhappy about a new signings, being played out of position, morale, retirement and many, many more. How you deal with these issues is entirely down to the manager.

Transfer Deadline Day: Is now a fully fledged feature of its own in Career Mode and on transfer deadline day the game advances hour by hour to allow you to wheel and deal before the window slams shut. You also have the option to stall transfer deals to allow your self more time to decide between multiple targets.

Form and Morale: Are both back and will need to be delicately managed over the course of the season. These two features plugin to the ‘Player Stories’ system where players will become and unhappy for any number of reasons.

Player Growth: Is allegedly fixed, but we’d need to play for multiple seasons to confirm this. However one very positive example came up when playing a Career Mode as Southampton. Just 3 games in to the season Alex Oxlaide Chamberlain recieved a substantial amount of growth receiving around 10 stats improvements. Most were just +1 but there were a few, +2 and +3 upgrades too. Which when compared to FIFA 11′s +1 growth for an entire season is surely a good sign. Alex is a player who you’d expect to have fairly rapid growth too so the scenario seemed to fit well.

This post covers the Career Mode features we saw six weeks ago but we’ll bring you an updated post with impressions as soon as we’re back from the Guildford play test.

    what about the ‘be a pro’ mode?
    any new features?

  • Paulo

    Agreed with Josh
    Is that hard to put some real generic face in order of a “shadow face”?
    The same goes to names… how about EA does a google research and pick some U-17,U-15 players names in order of ridiculous long names that looks likes they are from brazilian royal family…
    The search engine for players sucks too, you had to tap the d-pad like crazy to scroll…
    And last but not least sorry for bad english.

  • attoozil

    @josh anthony ur damn right about making up players coz it makes the game uninteresting and dull + we need real players while scouting…
    about the player improvements plz it shouldnt be like rapid improvement just as it waz on ps2, make it realistic.
    we need improvement on commentaries, we are tired of hearing the same thing for 3good years..the stadiums too plz we need more stadiums coz its not nice to see about 10teams using the same stAdium all the time…thankyou

    seriously – no online features for career mode? no cooperative play? no competition from your mates or others over xbox live as you go for the league or the cups? bye bye FIFA, done with this. ‘revolution not an evolution’ huh? haha right yea think I’m already looking forward to saving money by passing on this title. not even going to wait and see how they’ve passed over manual players yet again in the ‘online features’ lol what a joke

  • Pip

    There is no training mode either which is a disapointment. If you want custom set-plays you have to go out of career mode, set one up and go back in. It should be there. EA this stuff is GLARINGLY OBVIOUS!!!

  • Gabber

    @Zack, Just play PES

  • Guilherme

    @Gabber:

    FIFA wants to be the best game out there and EA wants everyone to buy their game. Telling someone to play another game isn’t addressing the issues the FIFA series has. PES 2012 very likely will not have manual shooting but even then, if they finally get a few kinks fixed, it may be enough for me to return to Konami. Now imagine me multiplied dozens of thousands of times. $$$$$

    @Guilherme

    I really think the FIFA v PES thing matters very little. Millions of
    people buy both titles. EA and Konami both do extremely well for themselves. Both games offer certain things the other doesn’t… At this point it has very little to do with which game is “better” and more to do with preference. EA and Konami both Im sure see the flaws in their games and every year make an effort to better the previous title.

    Is the advancing on the calender between matches still so slow?

  • D-D-Chels

    Please put in Player editing within Career Mode. SOOOOO Boring playing with the same boots, look etc year after year!!!!

    Also pre set teams would be nice for fa cup matches etc without having to go into TM every time, should be able to play a youth team or second string with the click of a button.

  • damchaang

    create club, stadia, crest, sponser etc .fifa ballondor ,afc ,

  • quentin

    Was the evolution of the players changed?
    Because in fifa 11 developing the statistics of a young player so that he becomes an essential player of our team after x matches was totally impossible. We sometimes had general’s increase of 1 but no more.

  • TheLiverpoolWay

    Nice.

    I’m excited about the Youth Academy! All through my FIFA11 Career Mode I rely on foreign young talent when I’m looking for youngsters. Hopefully with the Youth Academy I’ll be able to grab some young British talent :) The only young British talent on FIFA11 were the young players that were practically in the reserves or ones that are from other teams, and they are all like an under 70 OVR Rating and they hardly grow, which takes me to the next thing I’m happy to hear about…

    Player Growth. Sounds promising. This was a big problem in FIFA11, one good example is the paragraph I wrote above..
    Hopefully in FIFA12 if I play youngster John Flanagan at Right Back for 3 seasons he’ll actually grow at least +5 (Probably more I hope) in terms of OVR rating and just general stats.
    Right now in FIFA 11 I have played Flanagan for 3 seasons and he has grown by…. Wait for it……………………………….. +1 Whhhheeeey!! O_o

    Player Form and Morale, this used to be a thing I expected in almost every football game from the moment I bought PES5. Yet it has been missing in these latest editions of FIFA. Not much to say here apart from it’s back and that’s a start.

    Transfer Deadline day is something quite new. I’m looking forward to this because sometimes a leave some negotiations a little late! It’s another cool thing added, and for once something that’s new to Career Mode, unlike the things mentioned above which have literately been bought back to FIFA rather than being something new..

    FIFA12 Career Mode sounds like an improvement. But that’s all it is. It’s not exactly revolutionary, like David Rutter said it would be (I’m aware Rutter said that FIFA12 as a whole will be revolutionary, but when asked about Career Mode in an interview he also stated that it would be revolutionary too).

    That’s all folks! Bless yo face.

    Hi guys, this features roundup only scratches the surface of Career Mode. Many of the questions you’re asking will be picked up in our in depth impressions on Friday and our Q&A slightly further down the line.

    Oh and we’re doing a Career Mode Special podcast as well, so plenty more to come on CM.

    When in Fifa in career mode for ex., will we see, where you can make your own manager, give him clothing, appearance, hairstyle and so on. And see him on the pitch like in the WC 2010. hope fifa gets more visually in career mode and in everything, in transfers, training, and press conferences before and after a match with coaches and players, and when they buy new players, so we can see players be presented in the Club with fans journalists, television camera as in reality, and not only in text, it doesn’t give the same feeling like when its visually. Fifa needs to do more work on that and the graphic and not only the gameplay. Fifa have the last couple of years almost only focused on the gameplay, and today its very good, but all the other things in the game, all the football outside the pitch, cant match the quality of the game on the pitch and that is very sad. I hope it will come soon, in the near future of fifa.

    what about this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M3kmRiyFW0
    talk to the press???

    When you win a cup or league or whatever it may be, you see players carrying an imaginary cup which we are not able to see. Change on that as t is very bogus
