FIFA 12 Player Face Capture

Nice little video this, demonstrating just how EA SPORTS superb eight-way facial technology captures footballs biggest stars and how vast the gulf in quality can be, especially when benchmarked against FIFA 11.

Essentially it involves a truck load of cameras, one professional footballer, a white tent, powerful modelling software and some talented individuals to create the magic. Although I’m pretty sure you need to strike a more appropriate pose than Mr Albrighton…

Superb technology and the faster it expands throughout the FIFA player roster the better.

The faces in FIFA look absolutely amazing, and even those that don’t have a face it’s clear that there was some attention to detail.

A good example of that is Porto’s GK that doesn’t have a real face, but from a distance it really looks like him because they’ve nailed the body type and the way he dresses.

Still, I think that this process is still to heavy logistics wise. They need to find a way that a 3d model is produced from basic pictures, or they need to allow the users to be able to create the faces for them.

How do they justify Barry Bannan having his real face on fifa, and not Luis Suarez??

  • unknown

This tech needs to expand beyond faces and do full player body captures, this would hopefully improve player models and help identify players even better

  • kenneth

do this with all the national teams then the big players in different clubs have thé right faces.. and not only some of the clubs..
a good edition for euro 2012

EA is the only company that can’t model player faces. PES, MLB the Show, and NBA 2K all have awesomely modeled player faces and they do not need 8 cameras.

Totaly agree with Kenneth…please EA do the same with all the most important national teams concerning euro2012: Germany(even if they already had it, some new players can get it,), Italy, France, SPAIN, PORTUGAL, England, Netherlands… this way we will get 90% of stars from the world having real face in fifa13!!!
    Please…

And I thought C Ronaldo looks absoloutely horrible in fifa 12.. Marcelo too doesn’t look like himself..

EA should be at the euro’s with the teams taking play model shots. there’s A LOT of downtime for players at these tournaments. It would be a perfect time to capture them for FIFA13.

  • David Bryant

@AnthonyOA not a bad shout that, generally speaking EA do go to the players for the capturing rather than them coming EA so although hanging out at a major football tournament is a “tough” job.

I’m sure someone could do it :)

@Si, Suarez plays for Liverpool and not Aston Villa.

  • Si

Yes I’m fully aware who Suarez plays for. But why do any Villa players have their proper faces and not someone like Suarez. As far as I knew, Villa’s partnership with ea was for the game sleeve and other such things teams like Derby and Everton had.

  • Saf

@Si its not as simple as just going up to the players and taking their pictures. They have to arrange it with the club and there are alot of logistics, im pretty sure they tried but its not exactly always possible.

It is faaaaar to few players with real faces in Fifa 12. All the best talents in the world for example: Neymar, Hazard, Ganso, Lucas, Koulibaly, Wickham, Canales, Muniain etc. I (and thousands with me, just check the forums on EAs website regarding starheads) think this is terrible, at least make them the old way if you can’t afford to travel around with all this equipment.

  • Thomas

    @Niclas

Very much agreed, it’s disappointing how few players have a decent facial capture, I’m not sure how EA, with all it’s resources, can’t come up with a capture system somewhere between a logistically straining hundred odd cameras and technicians, and some dude with a PC painting a starhead face. Not to do them a disservice, but I can’t be the only one who refuses to buy ‘starheaded’ players in career mode. Severely limiting the young players I can buy. Not having Marvin Morgan for Shrewsbury fully realised is one thing, but no Pedro? Busquets? Valencia? The undoubtedly fantastic full capture, just highlights the vast gulf between it and the ‘standard’ treatment.

If i want to use a player with a 50p for a head, i’ll pop in fifa 99.

I love Fifa 12, I’m just another spoilt gamer who has grown to expect a little more from the series.

Faces are all ok…but what about SMITH on the back of XAVI or any other player that plays?

  • theirfan38

At least if EA can officaly explain how the deal works it will be a superb answear for the community. I mean as everybody stated, ok they cannot do Barca and Real madrid teams because they have (i guess) a contract with Konami, spanish league is fully in contract with Konami.
But at least can’t EA go to the national team, Spanish and Portuguease and Argentina, and shoot the players like they did with Germany…This way we get at least 90% of players of barca real valancia…I mean you all know what I mean…
I am not here to say and cry because Ronaldo and messi haven’t got their face in the game, I am here to ask to EA why they do not explain us how it works!!! It is not a confidential file!! we are not in an X-files episode! something involving the ET’s or Mulder or I don’t know what that EA cannot explain or talk ’cause if they do it will be the end of the world!!
