FIFA 12: Tactical Defending

There’s a new defensive gameplay mechanic in town for FIFA 12 and it’s called “Tactical Defending”. This new addition is a collaboration of a 2-3 new defensive gameplay features which aim to turn the way we defend in FIFA 11, on it’s head for FIFA 12. EA were aware of  the overly punishing auto-tackle and what they call “homing missile pressure” and this is their answer to these massive community hates. Here’s a run down of the features that make up Tactical Defending in FIFA 12.

[DISCLAIMER] The videos that we saw were from both the Test Bed environment and live FIFA 12 gameplay. Whilst what we saw was incredibly impressive, these videos are chosen with the express intent of demonstrating the new FIFA 12 features as simply as possible. FIFASoccerBlog will not be providing a definitive opinion on these new features until we get our hands on the game, we’re simply going to relay what we saw and what we were told.

Contain – The existing pressing system in FIFA 11 has been removed and has been replaced with a new mechanic called “Contain”. Instead of aggressively pressing, players will now “Contain” their opponents by jockeying simply shadowing their opponenets movements. They will not close down or tackle unless instructed to do so.

Contain Proximity –  The distance at which you Contain can be adjusted with the left stick, allowing you to close down your opponent or drop off deeper.  The video that we saw showed players being able to close down to within about a yard of their opponent and being able to drop off to a maximum of about 10 yards.

The Purpose of Contain –  The Contain mechanic aims to make your time without the ball in FIFA 12 more engaging, providing tactical conundrums about when to close down, when to drop off and most importantly when to commit to the tackle. Defending in previous FIFA titles has been very much about holding pressure and letting the AI do the rest, not any more.

High Pressure – Has been a problem with the last few FIFA titles and the easiest way to explain how Tactical defending has tried to remedy this is quite simply that the pressure system has been removed all together aiming to give us all more time on the ball. If you steam in to a challenge against Messi now you can expect to be suitably embarrassed.

Secondary Press? – You still have the ability to call over a secondary defender if you wish but they will also only Contain and not pressure. A new AI behaviour has been implemented to link multiple players that are performing the Contain function. Secondary defenders will now shut down a different angle to the area that you are already covering. This allows multiple angles and passing lanes to be cut off creating pressure without a tackle ever being performed.

Auto-Tackle is No More - In FIFA 12 the auto-tackle function has now been removed. To initiate a tackle now requires a button press which must be timed correctly to be successful. If you’ll excuse me for a second…… YESSSSSS!

Timing is Key - Tackles can now be missed if the timing of the button press is too late or too early. This simply doesn’t happen in FIFA 11. We were shown a video example of Theo Walcott cutting in side and weaving between two defenders who had both miss-timed tackles. Theo was able to manoeuvre between them at incredibly close proximity with ease using the new Precision Dribble feature.

Tactical Defending - EA want Tactical Defending to “bring the skill of real world defending in to FIFA” and to make 1v1 situations “feel like individual battles”. In previous FIFA games the defending has been largely automatic with only minimal user input required. Tactical Defending takes the old system and hands control to the user aiming to create a realistic defensive experience.

Tactical Defending is the biggest shake up of the “art of defending” since we can remember, what do you think of EA’s new gameplay feature?

This sounds promising but I can definitely see this as being the most frustrating feature of FIFA12. If it is not implemented PERFECTLY then it will be the cause of many screams at the screen wondering why your players are dropping off when your asking them to get tight just letting players walk through your defence.

I think it’s safe to say that everyone that has been playing FIFA will have to re-learn the game.

Can I also say goodbye to the noobs who I meet online. Bye-Bye.

Good stuff. One thing that concerns me after reading this and watching the leaked vid is that the distance allowed to contain the dribbler is big! In real life matches containing only occurs in close proximity. 10 yards sounds ridiculous. Also, as Xaor mentioned in his write-up, the crab-walking is too accurate and “too fluid”… It’s just looks unrealistic imo to crab walk like that without getting tired.

Solution: shorten the distance range of containing + if possible, add a stamina gauge to the crab walking.

I like what they did in FIFA11 with 360 Fight For Possession, but sometimes it actually seemed like I could just just the left analog stick and push the player off the ball, which to me seemed a little too easy.

I think I’ll have to judge this Tactical Defending by actually playing FIFA12. So far it seems… Interesting.

Unless they completely bullox the new defensive systems, it’s hard to imagine this being anything but an improvement, and possibly a massive one at that. They didn’t give a good explanation of how secondary pressure will be affected, so that’s still somewhat a concern, and we can only hope they implement the new defensive features so that there’s no ‘loop-hole’ strategy to spam.

I’d rather defending be too hard than too easy (like this year) so thank the heavens that Auto-tackle is being removed!!

I’m in love with this. Though, I wonder how the strength of players affect how well they can tackle or how they shield the ball.

Essentially, how will the jostling system be affected. Can you rub shoulder to the shoulder and barge people off the ball like before at all or is that completely out with the pressure system?

  • mfmaxpower

Oh, and also I really want to hear how this will affect the CPU defending. It’s not enough to make defending more realistic and difficult for us, they need to ensure that the CPU is no longer super-human defenders unbound from the laws of physics, etc.

This sounds great and so glad the auto tackle has finally gone, just hope the contain button and push-pull feature doesn’t replace it.

I also hope they get the balance between defense and attack right and it doesn’t go the other way and become really easy to score and impossible to defend.

For me, sounds a lot like Konami’s new defensive system they used in PES 2011 last year (down pretty much to the wording about using the left stick to drop off or press closer). While that game had many great parts but not a great sum, I do think the defending was much improved by this new system and thus I believe that FIFA will also benefit. It is interesting to see how FIFA, while much the better footie game, is still taking cues from Konami about ideas for their game

    Lovely, just lovely

This is good. Wanna see how the “pros” defend online now.

  • San

YESSSSSSS!!! This means I can play properly and not like a noob against teams, coz the noobiest way to defend on fifa 11 was the best way to defend :)

Mind you, get it right Fifa coz I don’t want to just allow them to have 5 yards space so that they can run diagonally past me. Very risky this, please GET IT PERFECT or their will be a lot of hate and even more attacking noobs!!!

  • walks

will make the game alot more challenging which i think is a postive.
though it does scare me online wise. Its a well known fact that you get a fair share of button lag in fifa and this could cause major problems online.
So will EA invest more in online service.

  • ZORAY

Awesome this sounds incredible ea it seems are listening, should bring alot of realism and skill to the game.Wonder how the button bashing pressure abusers will cope with the auto tackle removed, alot of them think they are good, theres not alot of skill involved in holding down the pressure button, bring the noobs on in fifa 12 hope the game lives up to the expectations…..

I also hope they get the balance between defense and attack right and it doesn’t go the other way and become really easy to score and impossible to defend.

  • Luchian Florin

cool man…it’s exactly what we want from a fifa game…to be more realistic…I can’t wait to play fifa 12

  • jordan y

LOVE THIS!!! it sounds like they are really pushing this game towards realism and are eliminating the easy, arcady style of fifa 10. noobs, beware for your days of using the deathgrip on R2 and circle are numbered. i personally am REALLY excited by this and dribbling aspect bc im a huge barca fan and i try and structure my team and my tactics to be as realistic and true to barca as possible. but with this ridiculous defending (especially the recovery speed of defenders) it makes it RELE hard to replicate how barca play. hope this puts things back in balance, but not slight it too much in favor of offense. from the sound of things tho, its really going to make players think more and it will reward those who know how the game is actually played instead of noob button-mashers. we can only hope…
