FIFA 13: Tactical Freekicks

Setting Up The Pieces

Freekicks in the FIFA series have certainly been neglected over the last few years but in FIFA 13 EA are adding a wealth of new features under the banner “Tactical Freekicks“. Here’s what we know so far.

Tactical Freekicks

Attacking Options

  • You will now be able to have up to three players over the ball in freekick situations.
  • Anyone of these players can perform dummies at the freekick and once they have run over the ball they remain active as a passing option for the kick taker.
  • Tactical Freekicks will allow you to create your own options from dead ball situations as well as shooting or crossing for team mates already in the box.
  • A new suite of shot animations have been added to FIFA 13.
  • A new suite of goal celebrations have been added to FIFA 13.

Defensive Options

  • To combat the multiple dummy runs the defensive wall can now reform after jumping for the first time, allowing them to try and block for a second time.
  • Players can now be added and subtracted from the wall, allowing complete control of your defensive setup depending on the location of the freekick.
  • In FIFA 13 you can now set a charging player from the wall to close down freekicks which are passed, or tee’d up for more powerful shots.
  • In FIFA 13 you can now creep the wall forwards to shorten the distance to the kick taker.
  • Creep too far though and the referee will push the wall backwards and or book a member of your team who was present in the wall.

So that’s Tactical Freekicks, and I’m sure you’ll all agree there are some really promising additions there which should allow plenty of variety should you choose to utilise them. The controversial update is of course the ability to creep the wall forwards so, hit the comments and speak your mind.

I foresee red cards for creeping walls. (second yellows)

Really good additions there. They are trying to get it to be as real sim as possible. I like it.

Not to be a sour puss, but isn’t ‘creeping’ in a wall against the rules, dare I say even, cheating?

I’m all for it, but they argue that shirt tugging and diving in the box will never be added because as an official FIFA game they don’t won’t to be seen condoning it. Yet, attempting to con the ref in this manner is okay?

I don’t get it, add Football as a whole or leave out little quirks that’ll just annoy people in the long run.

As far as free kick taking goes, I would have preferred the actual mechanic of taking a free-kick to have received some love.

This will be a case of wtf that guy moved 9 yards closer and got away with it
And wtf I moved I millimetre closer and got a 2nd yellow :/

The creeping of the wall annoys the hell out of me in real life, so I hope it really isn’t much of a factor come game time. Adding and deleting members of the wall…. can i get a HALLELUJAH! Soooo overdue! As for the rest, good additions

  • Howard Webb

You can pull on people’s shirts on Fifa 12 can you not?

  • theirfan38

God !! have to wait 2012 to create such a minor and easy element as adding or deleting players in the wall…damn it, as if it was soooooo hard to create that in this game…
as for the moving the wall, I mean this is so easy to implement, every year people ask for it… at last after years they definitely implement it!!

If you don’t wanna get a yellowcard don’t move the wall, as easy as that. It’s YOUR decission.

  • David Bryant

The other thing that will plug in to this is referee personality, some refs will clamp down on any movement, whilst others may allow a step or two. This “creep” will be really slight guys and the wall still be 9+ yards away.

Agree with Nick though it is odd for EA to accommodate something which is technical cheating, especially with their previous stance on diving.

Although saying that, watch any freekick, in any league in the world and tell me the defensive wall doesn’t creep? ;)

  • Tim

Yeah the wall does always creep, but watch any game in the world and tell me nobody went down easy or dived to win a free kick.

Doesn’t mean that the cheating should be happening or in the game.

That being said I’m not totally against it being in Fifa. I just don’t agree with the stance of allowing some forms of cheating in and not others.

amazing , finally a freekick system thats gonna be the nuts !

  • Sanvir

Amazing stuff, Fifa are really starting to understand Football. One other thing though, they still must sort out what happens when a defender goes on the line, as this would cause havic in real life.

  • Tom Collins

If you can creep forward you should be able to dive. Cheating shouldn’t be in football but at the end of the day it is. Also some players dont dive but most go down VERY easily, if there was a button you could press when off balance from a tackle that allows you to fall down to the ground I believe this would be great but I’m sure this will never be added

  • BC87X

I hope the computer players will react and adjust when players online stand on the line to block the free kick and move in much deeper in the box since they won’t be called offside. That is by far one of teh most annoying thing online and I also hope they will allow for more different free kick techniques.

  • galloitaliano

I don’t mind if people want to creep the wall forward AS LONGAS, I repeat, AS LONG AS the referee book them for breaking the rules, that’ll do it for me, but if referee won’t do sh… about it, then please don’t add this feature. We have far too many issue to worry about right now.

I have a question, what do I have to press to make my wall jump ?
