FSB Retro – FIFA International Soccer

We tried this once before, but it never really got off the ground. Probably because reading and writing about old games is pretty boring, but we didn’t want to give up on the idea, so we made a video instead.

The plan is to work through most of the titles in the FIFA series and reminisce about features we’ve lost and gained along the way. Surprising how enjoyable this game still is.

Seeing as there’s technology involved we ballsed it up and lost some of the match audio, as well as our levels being less than smooth. We’ll get there eventually…

Brings back memories. Loved the early fifa’s, especially playing with Ally McCoist (the lincenced ones) who scored me bucketloads

  • Zub

Wow, this brings back memories. I waited for this a long time when they ported it on the Amiga.

  • Jamie

2 Programmers in the opening credits, amazing lol

  • Guillermo Rojas

Are you guys going to cover all the FIFA games?

  • neo

The goalkeepers are better in this one then the current fifa generations, I still got this game hidden away somewhere was good for its time.

  • Casartelli

I think the crowd is looking better than todays fifa’s ;)
Had this game on my Megadrive :)

Retro gaming at it’s best. I spent hour after hour on this. It’s good to see how far we’ve come.

Scoring on the angle, gk blocking glitch, artificial pitches, Ron Barrs pre match commentary it’s enough to bring a tear to the eye.

Think you’ve broken my rose tinted glasses though.

Ps, i always though man on right the of Mexican wave was a Canadian mountie, don’t ask me why, i was 13.

  • Tom Mills

@guillermo that’s the plan, we might skip one or two though. :)

Bought myself FIFA 97 on the Sega Megadrive yesterday, ordered a scart cable too so I can record so let me know if you need any footage :)

  • Tom Mills

@Spike Cheers mate. Going to do them on my PS1 copies through my PS3 up to 2000/2001 then figure out a way to record off the PS2 versions upwards of that.

Skipping 95, It’s basically the same as this with club teams. Going to FIFA 96 next.

I have this and all other Megadrive FIFAs on a Sega Megadrive emulator for my PSP and have a season going with Arsenal, lol.

  • medley

I never had this on my mega drive, I had Fifa 95 but my mate did. Great game back then

  • Daz sum

@tom mills, good memories! That’s the camera we need on this generation of FIFA, brilliant angle!!

  • EFC

OOOO the good old days of coming back from clubbing and firing up the Sega with all the lads.

  • Sandmania

Strangely despite its awesome graphics and animations the game actually left me cold. I played it again and again as I enjoyed pretty much everything about it except the actual gameplay. Kick Off 2 and Sensible Soccer gave me much more enjoyment than the early FIFA’s ever did.

  • Gui Cramer

I remember kick-off goals vs Qatar, hahaha. I absolutely love the atmosphere, it gives me a 1970 World Cup feeling.

  • HT

    this is a good idea

  • Lets.talk.fifa

I think the dribbling in these Megadrive Fifas was a bit looser and less magnetized than in today’s editions. Would like to see more of this kind of dribbling where you can tap a button to knock the ball around and run after it, similar to FIFA 95/96 on the Sega Megadrive.
