Podcast 03 – The Real FIFA 13 One

This week myself and Dave are once again joined by Toby Ross, AKA FIFA apologist and superfan Xaor.

We learned a lot whilst recording this podcast, not only is manual the ONLY way to play but only “proper people” play on PS3. We reminisce about FIFA 09 and wonder whatever happened to the massive issue that was lag switching?

We also shared our opinions on FIFA 13, because we’ve played it now. So… Yeah. Have a listen.

so how can we affect the ballcontrol ??? or is it all about the ai to get the ball under controll or not.. dont reall get it.. sounds like first touch isnt about the gamer.. ist only about how good your team is

  • Toby Ross

@Sam: You can affect the way you control the ball in a number of ways, but the major one is considering more the passes you actually make. You want to be thinking about making sensible passes which will in the longer term allow you to move forward. Having said that, the speed and direction you input does have an effect as well.

  • Tom Collins

Trying to play the “Barca way” might be more effective if you can pull it off then ?

  • Xavi

Hey @Toby..Cheers on the full manual advice.. (It will take some getting used to, for me) On another note, do you know if EA listen to the FSB podcast? Because, the points raised as well as your concerns would massively improve the game. I know Rob Hodson RTed the podcast but does it actually reach EA and the devs. I definitely hope so.. ^_^

  • Tom Mills

@Xavi once you’ve got the hang of it you’ll never look back. No idea if they listen unfortunately.

  • Xavi

:) I’ll start practising it in FIFA12 then. I’m still fearful of playing against persons NOT using manual, however. Its seems like it will be almost as unfair as using tactical defending while my mate uses legacy(offline). I know its a steep learning curve but the game seems to reward assistance more than solely user-based input. How well did you find manual fared against assisted players?

  • King Geoffrey

@xavi: I played full manual for 4 years. Asissted players have advantage over you for sure however I don’t think the game rewards assisted player more… it’s just assisted.. you already knew that your opponent will be assisted by CPU. right?

The real reward comes from full manual control though. You are rewarded for every success you accomplish and punished for every mistake.

  • Pacheco13

Any idea if the menus will change, or are we still going to have one more year of that sluggish buggy UI?

  • Xavi

    @Toby

You know what grinds my gears though? The fact that when i engaged Rob Hodson on Twitter he denied the ability of the CPU AI to go on those ‘ballerina-type’ runs where they dodge every tackle (which you even noted in the Podcast).

EA needs to realise at times that saying ‘we will check to see if this is a problem’ is exponentially better than saying “its not in the game, or it doesn’t happen”. They love to subliminally call the community blind and retarded, and personally I can’t stand it. If I spoke about the fact that the CPU AI does some pretty overpowered and physically impossible things on 12′ he would simply say “it doesnt”. I swear, just hearing you guys speak of these issues makes me realise that Rob is either poorly informed or rather too distant from the actual game’s mechanics to comment reasonably. Oh for the day when the community could speak to EA and have them admit faults and let us collectively & properly discuss viable ways to fix them. As for now, the forum is a farce and certain EA employees previously prominent there seem to have disappeared completely (Ian Jarvis anyone?). I swear, if they are proud of being voted the ‘Worst company of 2011″ they need to completely do away w/ any semblance customer service, which probably wouldnt be difficult. LOL, what do ya think?

  • Xavi

^^^^ meant that toward @Tom, @Dave as well.. Its a reasonable point, isnt it?

  • Tom Mills

@Xavi having not seen those interactions (don’t know your twitter uname) I can’t really comment specifically but I see your point.

As for people going missing on the forums, developers that choose to use the forums are generally met with hostility (at best) or death threats (at worst) so I don’t really blame them for not sticking around. I understand people have frustrations with the game because there are reasons to be frustrated at times, but some forum users choose to vent those frustrations in the wrong way and that causes them to not use the forums anymore, meaning that people don’t get that interaction for long.

  • Xavi

^ I had never thought about that, tbh. To me FIFA has always been just a game, a very enjoyable one at times, but just a game nonetheless. Its sad really to think of the constant abuse devs might go through during their time on the forum. Forum Mods need to find a way of spotting/filtering out those who would be so inclined, so maybe more mature persons would offer feedback on how to improve the game. Still there HAS to be a proper medium to communicate w/ the fanbase.

Actually now that I think of it, the other day I did recall reading one of Rob’s tweets about forging a link between the community and EA. He was asking for suggestions on how to do this. I guess that’s encouraging, right? ;^) Definitely, hope so..

  • David

Nice podcast, as always. Thanks guys.

guys all this crap about ‘players asking for ball to the feet’ and stuff – old old news
i buy fifa every year because i love to play football on my playstation.
i have played fifa for 15 years, pro evo barely exists for me.
of course i will get the new fifa, i am the average fifa gamer and i don’t care about the changes to be honest. i know there will be changes, and i know i will enjoy playing it. thanks for letting me have a listen to what u guys think after playing fifa 13 though.

  • Tom Mills

    @dosh It’s really not crap.

  • dosh

    good. i genuinely can’t wait.
i wonder when arena mode will become multi-player (not just human controlled goalie v 1 human controlled outfielder) with multiple balls on the pitch – how it is in the NBA series. This way everyone playing will be able to have a go in the arena. Also wonder when arena mode will go online – so people can just walk about on a pitch, having a kick about.
