Replay Theatre
Oh how we rejoiced when we heard that the option to save replay to HD had made it’s way into Fifa 11. It’s taken far too long, but it’s back. No more “honestly it flew in from 35 yards”, now you can save your replays and keep proof of those wonderful peices of skill, great goals or moments of extreme fluke. Well, 5 of them anyway.
No, that’s not a reference to the Upload slots on EAFW, you really are limited to 5 save slots on the hard drive. Why? i’ve no idea. I’m still trying to understand it myself. I see no reason to cap the amount of replays you can save, the only limit should be the available space on your hard disk. Sadly EA don’t see it this way and the limit is there. Hopefully this can be addressed in a future update as well as possibly increasing the current length from 11 seconds.
Continuing on the theme of negativity, saving to the Replay Theatre takes just as long as uploading a video to EAFW. It’s painfully slow. To make matters worse, the video quality of replays saved to theatre is poor, the video is blurry and pixellated.
Here’s the final nail. It saves video files, not replay files. Once a file is saved, it’s fixed on the angles used when you save. You can’t quickly save a file at the end of a match and go back to edit it later, much like uploading to EAFW, you need to do all of your pans and camera editing before commiting to save.
On a more positive note, the addition of replay theatre does now mean that you can save highlights from online games. At the end of the match you now have an extra option in the menu, Highlights. In here you will find ten highlights selected from the game. On top of any goals scored, there will be saves and near misses for you to review and save if you wish. This does work well, the highlights it selects are nearly always the best bits from the game, I have only once found a highlight I wanted that wasn’t presented at the end of the game, although i’m sure as I go on I will find this happening more often, if you have a particularly eventful game then ten highlights will never be enough to pick out all of the action.
Even considering that it’s the first outing of Replay Theatre, the lack of options are baffling. I might have been expecting too much and ideally we will eventually see the option to save full replay files, so that you can go back and properly review moments captured in game, as well as a system that doesn’t restrict the number of files you can keep. These two details would make a huge difference.
Looking forward, the foundation is laid, but there need to be some serious improvements to make this a valid addition. It was such a promising idea but I don’t think replay theatre is going to be much use to people until these issues are addressed.
Lee Meadowcroft says:
The only real disappointment so far for me in Fifa 11. Nice write up and hopefully EA will take heed. I’ve actually noticed quite a lot of replays missing at the end of the match, I suppose this happens more often because I’ve been playing 10 minute halves. Doesn’t affect offline because I upload stuff straight away but if a beauty of a goal is missed online I won’t be too impressed.
MGMT says:
Hahaha. It’s so funny. Cause it’s so stupid. What’s wrong with their engine? Whats wrong? In the old fifas, like fifa 99 or fifa 2003 you could save replays and look at them after. IN THE OOOOOOLD GEN. THE OLD GEN. What’s wrong? Look at pes, it looks better, AND, you can go trough the menus with no framerate issues or no waiting at all, cause it just a menu, and just how it should be. What’s wrong with ea’s game? The graphics itself looks cartoony, it’s not like it’s lifelike graphics, then I could understand the super slow menus. But seriously… Why/what? Something is really wrong, and I don’t understand what. And again, the edit mode… Oh my gosh… It’s the same crap again… If you wanna edit the whole barca team and your fav team is man utd. You have to go trough the countrys again, then select barca for another player. IT’S RUBBISH. WHY? Just make a totally different game in fifa 12. Please.
MGMT says:
Otherwise, I like the game. But things like that makes me go shalalalala.
ruffneckc says:
This is spot on Tom and thanks for writing it! The Replay Theatre is shockingly bad. On top of what you’ve mentioned, you cannot even watch the replays FULL SCREEN in the theatre! It’s basically a tack on to fill out the feature list of the game and it won’t be used much I reckon! That said, the only way is up for FIFA 12 and beyond!
FIFA11! says:
To begin with i thought this might be a bit overated and not that good, but reading this, im impressed well done EA.
Oh yeah i was just wondering EA if you had different goal types and you could change the colour of the net, this would be great, remember its the little things that make the big difference.
1/10/10 <<<cant wait!
Benn says:
This is absolutely bull**** EA. What the heck were you thinking.. this is basically EASW on your console instead of PC. Seriously.. as already mentioned you could save long replays on a128 mb memory card on Playstation 1 and this is all you give us when we live in 2010 and more than 100 GB HDD’s. This is a huge joke! With this scamped piece of a Replay Theatre I can only imagine/have nightmares about how many more half-finished features you’ve put into the game.. well.. I guess I’ll just wait for thursday.
Carew says:
Spend $100 to buy what you need to capture from your tv.
Connect to laptop or computer and press record.
??????
Profit.
tarick spencer says:
Not a big deal to me,I usually upload through EAFW anyway so this won’t be a deal breaker for me come on 12:00.
Gareth Mensah says:
Doesn’t make any sense in light of every other feature. It’s like they decided to make it the Achille’s heal of an otherwise flawless game, why? Why five? Why can’t we edit it later on? If anything, that would allow players to record great moment and post them on youtube, maybe even have compilation of weekly top goals, dribbles, etc. I don’t get how they missed out on something so obvious.
Tom Mills says:
TBH Gareth that’s what i was expecting when i first heard about it and was looking forward to using it in that way. I was gutted to see what it was actually like. Also thanks to Ruffneckc for pointing out that the replays aren’t full screen. The header image is taken from my tv to give you some perspective of how big the window is, thats the size of the viewing window and it’s fixed.
Mitch K says:
What a joke! It’s things like this that really grind my gears with EA. It’s almost like they hold back developing features properly so they have something new to bring to the table in next years iteration. I won’t be suprised if next year they release the download cap and lengthen the replay time claiming that they’ve been ‘listening to the community’ and added the features we wanted there in the first place. Why not just get it right first time…No offense of course, and in general I’m loving how the game is coming along, but this just seems clueless. It would’ve been a tremendous feature to add but I’m sure it will be shunned by many now.
David Bryant says:
If anyone was wondering why this didn’t make my review its because Replay Theatre is literally a non-event. Nothing more than a placeholder for replays and a pretty bad one at that.
It has immense potential so we really need to push EA hard on this. Nice write up Tom.
Mitch K says:
Oh yeah, I forgot to say well done on the write-up! It’s good to see that FSB is impartial about things and talks about the negatives as well as the positives.
I suppose it’s asking a lot, but it’s a shame that this feature wasn’t available in previous builds so that people could flag it up as a problem. Even having it in the demo build could have given the team time to tweak it a little at least…? Having said that it’s a bit of a no-brainer that we would want simple things like being able to save as many replays as we want etc. so I don’t know. The PES series as far back as PES 5 (I think) have had a brilliant theatre mode – for all the cutting edge technology that gets poured into the FIFA titles, for them to implement something like that can’t be that difficult, can it?
Thomas. says:
This sounds eerily similar to the skate. series, where EA charged money for a “Filmer Pack DLC” with added features including more upload space.
I really hope this is not what they’re lining up for FIFA now…
karim says:
i saved a goal that i scored online, but when i try to open it, it wont open because i don’t have a lead profile or something.. what do i do???
thnx
guayomi says:
im very dissapointed. i change my old hd for a 250 hd one, just to save the replays… i hope that ea release a update that solve this issue.

fifaaddict says:
That feature is pointless, you should be able to store however many videos that your ps3 or xbox system allows.
