We’re not the Financial Times and we’re definitely not bothered about how other EA games are performing financially, but we do of course have a vested interest in our beloved FIFA, which by all accounts has sold like hot cakes. EA have released their preliminary financial results for its first fiscal quarter ended June 30th 2011 and they’re mighty pleased with the results.

Most of the report is as you’d expect mind numbingly dull but because we’re nice we’ll pull out all of the best FIFA highlights just for you:

For the quarter, EA had four of the top 20 selling games in Western markets: Portal 2, Crysis 2, FIFA 11, and Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12: The Masters.

Life to date, including digital and mobile downloads, FIFA 11 has sold nearly 15 million units, demonstrating strong cross platform performance.

EA Games Label and EA SPORTS garnered 148 award nominations and 19 wins at E3. Winners included Mass Effect 3, Battlefield 3, STAR WARS: The Old Republic, FIFA 12, SSX, Need for Speed: The Run, Kingdoms of Amalur:Reckoning, Madden NFL 12, and NHL 12.

FIFA 11′s digital revenue as of July 26th 2011 was $64 million through Q1 FY2012.

That’s forecast to grow a further $7 million through Q4 FY2012.

So there you have it, a little inside knowledge on the financial performance of FIFA 11. We’ve added the most relevant screenshots below and if anyone could tell us who is still buying digital products for FIFA 09, we’d appreciate it…

EA are blowing the final whistle (sorry, I couldn’t help myself) on online play for a pretty big chunk of their Football titles.

The service shutdown on the 8th of February will affect the following games:

FIFA 07 for Xbox 360

FIFA 08 for PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii

FIFA 09 for PC, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii

FIFA 09 Ultimate Team for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

FIFA Street 3 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

EA SPORTS™ FIFA Manager 10 for PC

2010 FIFA World Cup™ for PlayStation Portable and Wii

2010 FIFA World Cup™ Demo for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

UEFA EURO 2008™ for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

On their Service Updates page EA list the closures as accounting for a tiny percentage of online traffic to their servers.

The EA SPORTS™ games scheduled for shutdown in February 2011 represent roughly 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles. Despite some people’s perception, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these older games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games. These decisions to retire games is never easy. The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.

There hasn’t been a lot of notice given, so if you’re still playing those games online or have any outstanding Achievements/Trophies you want to mop up, you had better make the most of the next month.

What with the US landing themselves in the same World Cup group as England, the article details how they feel David Rutter has made the FIFA series to purposely distract the US players from actually training and getting good at football (any excuse…).

Whilst a fun read, the undertone of the piece is no doubt another pat on the back for Rutter, proving just what sort of impact the FIFA series is having all over the world. Click here to read the article.

Thanks as always to the ever present Alexrstone for the heads up.

For those on the 360 go to Game Marketplace > Explore Game Content > Game Add-ons > Browse and go to F for FIFA 09 then go across to Live Season All Leagues Pack which you will see is for free.

I don’t know what kind of effect it will have on the players what with there being no games going on right now but it appears that this is the last update that EA will be doing with Live Season for FIFA 09 so grab it while you can!

Whether they contain data or whether they are “blank” with it being the end of the season is up for discussion – you can read the thread on our forums here.
