Whats Wrong With: Custom Audio?

Custom Audio is number three in the Whats Wrong With series of posts. If you missed the first two on Replay Theatre and Creation Centre be sure to check them out and add your opinions in the comments.

To be fair to EA, they did pretty well with custom audio. Provided you spend some time setting up your playlists and getting your audio organised and labelled properly before you fire up the game, it’s a doddle to assign and customise through the Custom Music and Chants menu under My FIFA 11. We looked at Custom Audio when it was first released into the wild, and there is a small how-to to get you started here.

The menus are well laid out and there are a fair amount of match events that you can customise the audio for, Entrances, Goals, Victories, Defeats and General Crowd chants. The apply all option is an absolute godsend and should be updated to include an “apply to selected event for all leagues”, handy if you’ve built a generic chant playlist to cover the whole game. Basically, it’s a really good start, but it needs to go deeper.

Expanding on the existing options, there needs to be more customisation for specific match events, allowing us to really tune the audio experience. David Rutter listed “improved soul and passion” being on the “shopping list” for FIFA 12. A good way to supplement that is by opening up even more options for us to play with. For starters crowd reactions to cards needs to go in, but stay separate, as well as options for fouls and injuries.

You can already customise the audio played when your VP scores, this should be opened up to all players and include options for chants whilst they are in possession or fouled to help make it feel like the crowd are really reacting to whats happening on the pitch. Maybe one day we’ll get this level of interaction. we can dream:

YouTube Preview Image

I’d like to see the option to mark players as hostile, which you could then assign a playlist of appropriate crowd reactions to trigger when they step the slightest bit out of line.

For CM, there should be the option to assign pre match music to cups, which would override team entrance music, as well as the option to change the audio played after significant wins, be it over your rivals, or a cup win etc.

Volume was an issue for some people, so it would make sense to put in the tools to adjust that, as well as having a preview function to test how the clip will sounds when fading in from the generic crowd noise. Overall, I found the transition from crowd noise to chant and back almost seamless, others might not agree, but I personally never had any problems with it whatsoever.

Other improvements on the menu side of things, you currently can’t view the contents of playlists or preview them in game, those two features need to be added. You also currently make use of any of the music on the disk in any way, outside of the menus.

Custom Audio in FIFA 11 wasn’t without it’s fair share of problems. People complained of instances where a goal triggering custom audio caused the game to stutter, files not playing and audio being played at incorrect times. There may well have been more issues, but those are the ones I’ve seen mentioned. It goes without saying that these problems need to be fixed. In the last Manchester Derby I played, “We’ve got Cesc Fabregas” was not something I wanted to hear the crowd singing…

So , a good start but lots of room for improvement. As always, post your thoughts and ideas in the comments below.

a great improvement could be, when you scored a goal the stadium speaker should say the name with much more enthusiastic or the best way would be, the stadium speaker only sais the first name, and the crowd shout the last name ;)

very interesting post! I do agree with you 100%, I realy think custom chant is a great surprise this year, I manage to get aon youtube some very pleasant chants, players chants…and i love when they re played, but as you said I hope EA will not loose in mind this novelty for fifa12 and improve it in the way you desrcibe!! Just give us the tools EA, however you re doing a very good job concerning chants and public reactions!!

This was one of my favourite new features that was brought to the table in FIFA 11 but it did have its issues. Sounds playing at the wrong times is the one i notice the most, with songs from the playlist that i have set aside for the menu music playing in games. Not good.

One of the best things EA have introduced into the FIFA series. Why no patch to fix the wrong chant playing bug? Seems to happen the most with Arsenal.

I never even bothered with custom audio as it seemed too much of a faf on. There was enough bugs in the game without causing more issues by fiddling with the audio. For example menu music playing mid game and my blank avatar/face icon appearing over the pitch during online games. Annoying to say the least.

Glad people enjoy this addition but for me it’s far too much trouble for not enough gain. Or maybe I’m just lazy. Definitely could be that I’m lazy. I have messed around a bit though with custom audio, and I’ve got high expectations (demands?) for 12 so maybe next year!

One thing that isn’t mentioned is that scrolling through playlists and chants is a nightmare when you’ve got more than a couple of pages of stuff. It takes ages to load up each page. Obviously menus are a FIFA wide problem, but trying to sort out teams in all the top leagues, or all the clubs in England, is painful work.

  8. Tom Mills says:

Must be a PS3 problem Chris, I’ve not had any issues with playlists loading on the 360. I’ve only got about 5 or 6 pages of playlists though, i suppose that might be it.

  9. HoB says:

Hmm. Each page takes a few seconds to populate for me (on PS3 Slim), and combined with the standard unresponsiveness of menus and the sheer volume of stuff I’m dealing with, it makes going through big libraries of songs a real slog.

Have you tried going through your list of individual tracks, rather than playlists? That might give you a clearer idea of how it feels when you’re handling more material. Also if you happen to have a copy of PES 2010 or 2011 you should be able to see how quick these menus can be by comparison – they’re instantaneous and you can scroll from top to bottom of 1000 or so tracks in a few seconds.

  10. Tom Mills says:

I’ll try going through the tracks individually tonight then.

Another issue is how it play’s a clubs goal music even when they’re playing away. It’s silly little issues like that which ruin the feature for me.

  12. Paul Smeltzer says:

Agree that it can be a bit of chore downloading, naming, installing and creating playlists etc. but once you do it, you never need to go back to it, I did all mine the days the game came out and whenever I play with a team I haven’t played with for a while i.e. England the other day, to hear the FIFA anthem and then 3 lions and vindaloo blast from the crowd was a pleasure, even moreso as I forgot I’d even assigned them….so an unexpected pleasure. (the best kind?)

Anyway, for a first attempt, EA have done very well. Priorities for me would be making it easier to do i.e. the 360 crowd still have trouble merely transfering their chants to their console…the volume settings could be better and above all – not letting them affect the gameplay i.e. micropausing when they’re loading especially on Goal Music.
